Today’s Card: Five of Wands
The 5 of Wands depicts five figures and five wands – none of these figures are touching, but they all seem in a state of agitation. The wands depicted are are crossed over one another.
In some decks, the figures are holding the wands and actively fighting one another with them.
Minor Arcana – Wands:
The suit of Wands is associated with the element of Fire and represents passion and energy.
In general, the 5 of Wands represents conflict, annoyance, and frustration.
The figures in the card are all in a state of agitation – they aren’t facing one another in this particular depiction, which indicates that they aren’t on the same page. There is a difference of opinion. In some depictions, the figures are fighting one another with their wands, but even then, the wands aren’t actively hurting one another.
All of this suggests that there is not serious injury being done during this fight. Rather, there is a lot of tension and conflict, but that this conflict isn’t actually doing anything. The chaos created, then, is unproductive.
The card suggests that you are experiencing a period of frustration and struggle right now. As Wands tend to represent passions and creativity, often this card can be interpreted as writer’s block or having a difference of opinion during a creative project with those on your team.
They say that in Tarot, there are no “good” or “bad” cards – each card is meant to teach you something. But, of course, some cards have a more positive outlook than others. The 5 of Wands is generally regarded as a fairly negative card. It’s indicative of strife, struggle, and irritation.
When looked at another way, though, this can be seen as a constructive period of problem-solving. In work/creative projects, there needs to be brainstorming and often that period of brainstorming involves a lot of differences of opinion. Thus, the 5 of Wands might be encouraging you to let everyone’s voices be heard.
Again, even negative cards are meant to provide insight into our lives. The 5 of Wands, then, is offering advice – it’s suggesting that you might be having too much frustration or conflict over a situation and that your frustration isn’t leading to anything productive.
The 5 of Wands advises you to take a step back from your emotional investment in this matter, to be open to the differences of opinions you’re receiving, and to take a more enthusiastic and cooperative approach.
Guidance for Your Love Life
As I stated earlier, the 5 of Wands is generally regarded as a more negative card and that’s definitely true when it comes to romance. In a love reading, the 5 of Wands suggests that there is a lot of conflict and frustration happening.
If you’re single, this could just mean that you feel like there’s a great deal of competition to find love. Perhaps this is in reference to other singles out there that you are “competing” against, or maybe that you are internally feeling a pressure to find someone. Either way, if you’re single, this card is suggesting that it might stay that way for the time being.
If you’re currently coupled up, though, this card is indicating some jealousy or insecurity that might be impacting your relationship. You two are having a lot of arguments lately and aren’t seeing eye-to-eye on certain things.
This card, then, suggests that now is the time to take a step back from your day-to-day irritations with your partner and attempt to find a middle ground. It’s imploring you to compromise, to work together as a team to get past your issues rather than working against one another. Or, walk away from the relationship altogether.
The 5 of Wands tells you that what you’re doing right now isn’t working. Take a step back, get some distance, and try and figure out the best thing to do for you. You’re the only person who can determine what’s best, but you need to get away from the conflict and chaos to make that choice.
