Today’s Card: Nine of Wands
The 9 of Wands depicts a woman standing up with a wand held in her hand. She is holding the wand vertically, planted into the ground. She faces the reader, her eyes open, her head held high, and her face impassive. In front of her, there are 8 other wands planted in the ground as if they are a fence.
In some decks, the figure is facing away or looking at the 8 other wands rather than looking at the reader. Some also depict the figure with a bandage around his head.
Minor Arcana – Wands:
The suit of Wands is associated with the element of Fire and represents passion and energy.
In general, the 9 of Wands represents strength, resilience, and determination.
The figure depicted in the card seems somewhat weary (in some decks, that is more obvious than others), and yet, they are not defeated. In most decks, the figure has a bandage wrapped around his head. This suggests he has been injured in some way, that he may still be in the midst of a battle. Yet he is resilient and determined to press on.
All of this works to symbolize inner strength. The 9 of wands is telling you to continue onward – it’s saying that you might have more challenges ahead, but you’re almost at the finish line (9, is after all, the number right before 10 which represents the completion of something.)
Since Wands are the suit of passion and creativity, this card suggests that the struggle you’re facing is likely a creative one. Often, the bandage wrapped around the man’s head symbolizes blocked creativity – his thoughts are what have taken a hit.
I’ve mentioned several times before that there are no “good” or “bad” cards in Tarot, and this particular card pretty accurately reflects that. It’s one of the more “neutral” cards in Tarot. Every card typically indicates a “yes” or “no” (personally, I don’t like to answer yes/no questions, but it can be used that way.) The 9 of Wands, however, doesn’t play that shit. It’s a pretty straightforward “maybe.”
In general, the 9 of Wands suggests struggle and ongoing challenges, but it also suggests that you have a great deal of inner strength and that you will get through this.
Though the 9 of Wands indicates that there is an outside force creating a challenge for you (such as work), there is another interpretation available. Since you can’t actually see anyone or anything else in the card – just the one figure with some sort of obstacle to overcome, the card can be suggesting that there really is no external challenge.
In this way, the 9 of Wands is telling you that you are your own worst enemy.
Guidance for Your Love Life
I know, I know, I said that the 9 of Wands is a neutral card. And for the most part it is! Except when it comes to a love reading. Then, unfortunately, it’s not super positive.
Relationship wise, the 9 of Wands typically suggests a fairly rocky relationship.
If you’re single, this could be talking about a past relationship. Is there someone from your past who is still causing you pain? Even if they’re not actually in your life still, is the memory of them hurting you? If so, the 9 of Wands is telling you that you’re the one standing in your own way of moving on.
Of course, if you are in a relationship, this card is indicating that you and your partner are going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment. Maybe there is an increase in arguments or some turbulence happening. However – just as it indicated resilience and determination in the general reading, it can suggest the same thing in your love life.
You need to decide whether or not the relationship is worth it to you. Do you want to stick it out and fight for it? If so, the 9 of Wands offers a light at the end of the tunnel. You will get through this period of time. You need to recognize what it is that you’re fighting about, what it is that’s causing so much turmoil, and work together to overcome it.
On the other hand, if you don’t think it’s worth it (if your relationship is doing nothing but causing you stress or anxiety), the “light at the end of the tunnel” indicates that the end is near for the relationship. The only person who can really decide that, though is you. The 9 of Wands is asking you to take a good look at yourself and at your relationship. Do you think there’s a way through this?
Once again, this card isn’t telling you what to do so much as it’s telling you to decide what you think you should do.
