Today’s Card: Nine of Cups
The 9 of Cups depicts a figure leaping in midair above a treasure chest. Above them, there are nine upright cups in the air.
In yesterday’s post, I offered a simple tarot exercise to use when learning Tarot involving comparing cards from different decks. My example was the 9 of cups.
As you could see from that post, this card is often depicted differently in some decks, but the cups area always upright.
Minor Arcana – Cups:
The suit of Cups is associated with the element of Water and represents emotions and relationships.
In general, the 9 of Cups represents abundance, happiness, and being free to enjoy life.
This card is often known as the Wish Card and it tends to represent your desires being manifested. As Cups are symbolic of emotions and relationships, the wish fulfillment taking place is often something relationship based. Even if it’s not a romantic desire, it’s always something that is close to your heart.
The number 9 in Tarot represents fruition, attainment, and intensity. The 9 of Cups is all about your desires coming to fruition – you’re about to receive what it is that you’ve been longing for. There’s an obvious intensity to this card as well as it indicates a great deal of sensual pleasure and happiness.
In other decks, the image depicted in this card is one of a feast or celebration.
The Sharman-Caselli deck, for example, shows a young couple embracing one behind an elaborately decorated table. You’ll notice, too, that there are grapes on the table, a symbol of abundance and wealth.
This all works to suggest that you have an abundance of love in your life right now and it urges you to celebrate that.
They say that in Tarot, there are no “good” or “bad” cards – each card is meant to teach you something. But, of course, some cards have a more positive outlook than others. The 9 of Cups is clearly one of the more positive cards in the deck. After all, it is called the Wish Card.
It could, however, be representative of too much partying, suggesting that you’ve been allowing yourself to indulge too much lately. Perhaps you’ve been going out a lot or using your material wealth to show off.
When looked at this way, the 9 of Cups could be read as an indication that your focus is too much on superficial gratifications. Instead, this card is telling you that you should be trying to nourish your soul.
Most of the time, though, this is a positive card that gives you permission to celebrate your achievements. If you’ve been hard at work, this card tells you that you can take a break and enjoy the fruits of your labor for the time being.
Guidance for Your Love Life
In a love reading, the 9 of Cups is a fantastic card as it suggests an abundance of love, happiness, and sensual pleasure.
If you’re single, this could be an indication that you will soon meet someone special who makes you feel a deep sense of joy and comfort. It could also suggest that you enjoy being single – you have an opportunity to let loose and to indulge in the freedom of single-hood.
For some, this could mean having casual flings – if that’s you, then this card is telling you that now is a good time for you to do so! For others, this could mean going on lots of dates and letting yourself be wooed by potential suitors. Either way, go forth and have some fun!
If you’re in a relationship, the 9 of Cups indicates that you and your partner are experiencing a lot of happiness and love right now. It suggests that you are being satisfied in every way – both emotionally and sexually. This card also implies commitment, so the relationship here is not simply a superficial one, but a deep and lasting one.
