Today’s Card: Queen of Swords
This card depicts a woman sitting on a throne and holding a single sword in her right hand. Most often, she is depicted in profile rather than looking straight on, like the King of Swords, though of course, in some decks she does face forward.
She is also generally depicted sitting outside. Behind her is the sky with clouds and a single bird flying above the clouds.
Minor Arcana – Swords:
The suit of Swords is associated with the element of Air and represents intellect, logic, and conflict.
Court Member – Queen
In Tarot, Queens represent maturity along with the more feminine and emotional side of their suit.
In general, the Queen of Swords represents a person in your life (male or female) who possess wisdom and maturity. She can also represent you, but she almost always represents a person rather than an event.
As far as people go, the Queen of Swords is honest and intelligent. She’s someone who doesn’t bullshit – she can give constructive criticism and see through others who try to deceive her. If that happens, watch out! She’s not someone who takes being deceived lying down.
The fact that most decks show her in profile, holding a sword in her right hand while turned towards her left is highly symbolic. The right side represents logic and reason while the left side tends to represent emotions. Therefore, she is able to make emotional decisions based on reason and logic. She can set aside her own feelings to look at the bigger picture.
For that reason, she is sometimes perceived to be cold or unemotional.
Another important detail to notice is the sky behind her. There are a great deal of clouds, however, they are all gathering at the bottom of the card. Above them, is a single bird flying in front of a clear blue sky. Clouds represent difficulty or trouble (turbulent weather = turbulence in your life). The fact that they’re all positioned below her top half, though, suggests that she’s been able to overcome these obstacles easily.
In a reading, this card may represent someone else in your life (male or female) with Queen of Swords qualities. If so, perhaps this person is going to be giving you some blunt, constructive criticism about something. You may feel defensive at first, but this card is likely suggesting that you pay attention to this person’s advice.
It can also represent you. If that’s the case, it could be advising you to draw on your own inner Queen of Swords and set aside your emotions to make a decision with reason and logic. However, In some instances, this card could mean the opposite, that you are ignoring your emotions.
Guidance for Your Love Life
The Queen of Swords is fiercely independent – she’s a strong woman who doesn’t need anyone else to take care of her. If you’re single, this card is likely suggesting that you embrace your independence and freedom.
If you’re not single, are you feeling stifled by the demands of a relationship? Do you miss some of your old carefree ways? Or, rather, does your partner appear to miss their single life? When this card appears in a love life reading, these are questions to consider as it could be suggesting a slight disconnect in the relationship or a partner who is more focused on “I” than on “we.”
On the other hand, this card could also be suggesting the exact opposite.
The Queen of Swords isn’t super affectionate in her relationships, but she is honest, loyal, and able to stand on her own two feet. In other words, she’s not the overly clingy type. Perhaps you’ve been too needy in your relationship and this card is advising you to become more self-sufficient.
Like so many of the Court Cards, this one isn’t necessarily good or bad, but rather the interpretation is heavily dependent on the reading itself.
